“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can also achieve.”

The ingenuity displayed by young Nigerians despite socio-economic challenges could be mind-boggling at times. Nigeria is one nation where citizens have continued to wow the world with innovative outputs, which are often products of local resources. Hope, as the name depicts its bearer, has certainly aroused hope in many youngsters that Nigeria and indeed Africa, has a lot to offer the world in terms of human and material resources to enhance infrastructural development.

A native of Akwa Ibom State, Southern Nigeria, 15-year-old Hope Emmanuel Frank sprouts with ideas, which if properly harnessed, could catalyse Nigeria’s long walk to self-sufficiency in the automobile industry. Using wood and condemned laptop batteries, Hope wonderfully developed a moving excavator and a dump truck from the scratch.

In an interview with BBC Africa, the young genius disclosed that people are often amazed with his innovativeness, which many times is rewarded with kind support from Nigerians. “When people see me on the street operating my excavator and tipper, they are usually surprised. Some of them give me money,” he said.

One could liken the story of Hope to the childhood experience of Robert Kiyosaki, the famous investor, who, in his book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, explained that during his childhood days, his friend, Mike and he invented their own ‘legal tender’ using lead tubes of toothpastes. Although they later discovered that their invention was illegal, but it set them on the path towards wealth, which they are both famous for today.

In the same vein, the invention of an excavator and a tipper by Hope, which took him almost a year to invent, serves as a pointer to the great things to expect from him in the nearest future. No doubt, with his innovative mind, his future appears very bright.

Countries like China and Japan, which are part of the leading industrial hubs in the world, would never wish away the talent of smart kids like Hope. In actual fact, by now, he would have been engaged with professional studies and practical experiences in line with his inherent expertise. In the long run, he would become an invaluable asset to the country.

Hope seems to be resilient in making more inventions. Aside the invented dump truck and caterpillar, which has become talk of the town, he equally plans to work on more innovative projects. According to him, “my next project would be a payloader that can work and a helicopter that can fly with wireless remote.” He dreams of being one of the greatest inventors in the world — a reality that can be achieved with quality education and proper mentorship.

The dream could be pursued with necessary supports and actions from the government and other stakeholders. He has conceived goals which could put his feet in the global community as one of the greatest inventors of the 21st century. Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, and a host of other great inventors in history were no different from the young Hope. And since he believes he can be a great personality like them, he surely can, with requisite supports. After all, Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

If Alan Turing, the father of Artificial Intelligence, never got support by the government of England to further the invention of his Enigma machine to break German machine code, the Second World War might have extended beyond 1945, and he might not be the one being regarded today as the brain behind the timeous end of the war.

At times, great people stand on the shoulders of others to see farther and like those who have made history, Hope, hopefully, needs shoulders to stand on to become a notable and global inventor whose name would be seen on the pages of the Guinness Book of Record.
